BMP’s to Protect Water Quality
This seminar focuses on developing an understanding of surface water and groundwater quality issues from a human health and ecological perspective, what is required and how to protect water quality using Best Management Practices, and how to develop monitoring programs to ensure that Best Management Practices are working and that water quality is being protected. Seminar participants will be able to establish a water quality monitoring program at their golf course and know how to interpret the data generated from this monitoring; have a basic understanding of human health and ecological concerns with water quality issues; know about land use and source prevention BMP’s, how effective different ones are in protecting water quality and how they can implement them for their particular golf course; and will know how to select pesticides to protect water quality based on some simple indexing models.
Fertilizers and Nutrient Management
Plant nutrition has a significant impact on plant response. Plant available nutrients can influence everyday health of the plant as well as the plant’s response to biotic and abiotic stresses. This session will focus on turfgrass nutritional requirements, characteristics of fertilizer carriers and how to use them, and developing fertilization programs with considerations for environmental stewardship. Soil and tissue testing principles and practices will also be addressed.
